Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the west coast of Africa, edged by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. Monrovia is the capital and with a population of approximately one million people is Liberia's largest city. The Government form of the country is Republic, the currency of the country is Liberian dollar (LRD), and the total area is 111,370 km2. The total population is 3,042, 004, the total languages spoken are English 20% (official), some 20 ethnic group languages. The religions followed in the country are Christian 40%, Muslim 20% and indigenous beliefs 40%. Liberia has a hot equatorial climate with most rainfall arriving in summer with harsh harmattan winds in the dry season. There are 16 ethnic groups that make up Liberia's indigenous population. There also are sizable numbers of Lebanese, Indians, and other West African nationals who comprise part of Liberia's business community. Liberia, "land of the free," was founded by free African-Americans and freed slaves from the United States in 1820. An early group of 86 settlers, who came to be called Americo-Liberians, founded an arrangement in Christopolis (now Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe) on February 6, 1820. In Liberia's early years, the Americo-Liberian settlers periodically encountered stiff and sometimes violent opposition from indigenous Africans, who were excluded from citizenship in the new Republic until 1904. Between the 1940s and 1970s Liberia had it good; foreign investment was high, but at the same time social inequalities and hostility grew between Americo-Liberians and indigenous peoples. The terrain includes three areas Mangrove swamps and beaches down the coast, wooded hills and semi deciduous shrub lands along the instant interior, and dense tropical forests and plateaus in the interior. Liberia has 40% of West Africa's rain forest. Perched on the chin of West Africa's coast just above the equator, Liberia has a tropical climate with a pronounced rainy season from May to November. There is little seasonal difference with temperatures typically averaging around 30°C (86°F) between November and May, and only a few degrees lower in the middle of the year. Though, humidity levels of more than 85% in the dry season (November to April) and more than 90% in the rainy season (May to October) often make it feel much warmer.
